Okay, weird thing to comment on, but it’s been bugging me: these characters and all the fairies in this series used to be… cuter.
Back in the early days of the comic, the fairies were drawn much more like cute, anime women (plus some antennae and tails), obviously intended to be waifu material. This is especially true of the older bonus art. But some time around Chapter 7, as the series thematically moved further away from porn/smut, the fairies also gradually started looking less cute, less sexy. I see now that their faces are drawn a bit longer, their chins pointier, their eyes smaller, their curves and posing less feminine or provocative. Personally, in recent months, I have begun seeing them more as these strange aliens (that they always were) rather than as attractive beings.
This is not meant as a criticism in any way; I have been following FvT long enough that I come back to it every week (multiple times) for the story, rather than the smut. But this decreasing sexiness is something I have noticed, and I was wondering if others have noticed it as well? Is it intentional by the artist, and if so, is this change meant to alter the tone of the series?
Looking at page 100, I would say the fairies always had pointy chins. And on page 106 they are clothed same as this page. And I wouldn’t say they are not attractive.
So, it may be just feeling, like maybe the thematic change make you focus on them differently … or it may be some small change which is hard to point out … and, well, maybe the artist is also subconsciously under the effect of that thematic change?
Hard to say. Just note that I was totally expecting the Nadisha/Murish transformation to be sexier (although hard to say specifically in what way), and in this context, I wonder … maybe if it happened earlier in the series it would be?
I don’t know when the Nadisha chameleon battle artwork was made, but the result of the Nadisha/Murish transformation was known for a while (I’d say a year, maybe more)
For the fairy sexiness, when you look at the firsts pages, their face had a height to width ratio close to 1 and a more cartoony look, and this is probably what made them sexier.
I’m not complaining tho, I’m following this comic for the story
My intent behind the comic hasn’t changed, it has been over 7 years since I started the project and the idea of mixing story plot and sex remain the same, I feel my style simply changed over time. To me, early fairies look more childish than they need to be, and the nihallaks more floppy.
Gonna just throw in my 2 cent’s and say they all still look cute and sexy IMO. I feel like it’s just a personal taste for some people, and of course as art style’s evolve, thing’s are going to look different over time.
The only time the varying design’s took me off guard was way back when I first saw (had to look this up cause it’s been awhile) Macey, and thought she was Pregnant (which fairy’s can’t be in this world which was more confusing). But nope, just chubby. And looking back at her first appearance and original design, the context of her character is there. But it still feels more like it’s trying to fit into a basic design scheme then her current one. Which showcases more of her heftyness without it looking out of place with the rest of her body.
I can kind of see what you mean, the art style has barely changed, in line with what Eldrik said about skill growth. But at the same time they are less cute in a way. I think its a combination of a cognitive shift here where we start to care about them as characters we get less lustful towards them. That and their entire world has become less playful and innocent as we get closer to war and the dark forest. Still love the comic though: Come for the smut stay for the story.

Not the final look. The transformation itself.

… soooo, the early fairies looked cuter than intended because you didn’t have that much experience drawing them :-).
