No, but that is fair. If I had a nickel for each fairy in this universe that had a pet they wanna breed with…I’d have 2 nickel’s, but it’s weird that it happened twice.
It might be easier to build a machine to stop the egg developing until a later date, say, when an opening in the cave is available. Supplying the egg with enough magic so that it can develop might be hard to do, compared with freezing the egg’s development.
That’s not really an option. Emperor would not cooperate with her (and she has no reason to think he will). Either she will attack Nihallaks and steal the technology from them, or she would need to find Zak, who I don’t think she even knows about. And that’s assuming Nihallaks DO have such technology – it’s possible the cave is more advanced than what Nihallaks have.
It’s a little worrisome that Nova’s first thought is that Ominae would be trying to blackmail her. Do the Star Fairies have trust issues? Or is it just Nova? And what did she mean “she broke that rule once, and it changed Fairy society forever?” I thought no one else knew she broke that rule.
All star fairies have developed some kind of trust issues since the Fairy War. Regular fairies don’t know who Ominae’s parents are, but Ominae’s existence itself had serious effect on fairy society, from the destruction of the Northen Colony to the isolation of the dark fairies.
Soft genocide of star fairies? Or dark fairies? Either case, there’s nothing involved that can’t be suborned or hacked. The star fairies not allowing themselves to reproduce suggests either they want to eventually free fairies from their domination or they’re wary of creating their own competition. Or they might have a replacement only policy. I imagine the Stars aren’t completely in agreement about this. I wonder if Lucky has explored the option of revoking this rule. I’m sure she has, but I wonder what happened.
Genocide implies people are dying or being breed out of existence. That is not the case here. Fairies are immortal until killed. This is simply *necessary* population control of an immortal populace. The Star’s have been tasked by their “gods” with a very real mission. I’m not saying they’re doing it correctly (lucky for example proves that is not the case) but calling them evil is uncalled for.
No. The fact that a population is being singled out to have no descendants is absolutely genocide. That’s why I said “slow”. In the US it goes back the the evil Eugenics laws and Buck v Bell. This was the inspiration for Nazi Germany’s Race Laws
It’s not necessary, because 1) they still limit dark fairies more than other fairies 2) they have plenty of space outside the island. Also, even if it would be necessary, it would still be evil if they don’t EXPLAIN why it’s necessary and actually convince them to volunteer. And finally, I’m pretty sure that “the mission” is to fix whole planet and staying just on the island is failing it.
Wow, a lot to unpack, here…
First, “Immortal”? With respect to our dear wearer of hats, doesn’t the definition include the INABILITY to die in any way, including being killed? (If so, “immortal until killed” = 😆, respectfully.) I think someone here said “ageless” in a past…well, age, but that doesn’t account for their societal ability to heal just about any injury other than brain death.
Until something better comes along, I’ll just invent a compromise of “Demi-Immortal” and “Immort-able” into “Demi-Immortable”. They’re ABLE to be something similar to, but not quite, immortal, if it weren’t for that pesky evil intent. Or negligence. Or accidents, which could technically count as non-culpable negligence, depending on POV.
Next, “Genocide”. We must remember this is a different species compared to humans, and fictional at that (as far as we know…👽). Breeding interference toward a group of humans recognized as different from others may be a type of genocide for us, who are 1) pretty much individually guaranteed to die within 150 years of birth, and 2) not guaranteed that any group will come back again once gone. For fairies, who can live forever and may be able to bring back certain magic types, it very well could be necessary or not, as HKMaly suggested — the reason why hasn’t been adequately explained enough to pass judgement as if we are the jury in their trial.
Right now, It seems evil not only because of what we know of reality, but also because most of us are used to certain directions of storylines in fiction (and also because the author is pretty darn good 🙂), but to be fair, all the reasons and background info have not been revealed. I could easily see ways the Stars, and Star herself, could be justified with good writing… except for the hateful god-complex.
“Hateful” here would be not caring about any negative things that happen to people as you get to your own selfish (unapproved) goal, especially negativity that you could have prevented without significant self-sacrifice, especially when you officially have that responsibility, and esp. when you’re the CAUSE of many of those negative things.
I also agree with HKMaly that even though Stars limit themselves and the explained limits of the Magic Cave seem to reasonably legitimize limiting access, there is not enough “definite need” for the “Elemental” Fairies, nor a _definite_ inherent danger posed by the existence of any Dark Fairy*, nor the average of them more than the average of the others, to justify their limitation (despite that curt, racist line “We don’t need a surplus of ‘Death’ Fairies.” at https://eldrikdgt.com/fvt/main/page-528/ ).
I’m just saying, aside from the clear hate, things can still go in any direction. So… well done, Author.
Ophidiophile: Lucky probably tried to change things like that, and it didn’t work somehow. People resist change, whether guilty of unfair population manipulation or not. –JR
* “Dark Fairy”… I wonder if the word they use in their language is “black”, and “light” would be “white”, adjusted for English. I wish there was a common English word for “black” and “white” that neither sounded like/implied race-based things, nor good/evil. Visual phenomena only.
(….My vote would be “Jekt” and “Svoa”, as in “Jekt Black” (jet black) and “Svoa White” (snow white). I can only hope those aren’t too significant in the other languages I don’t already know.)

…ya know I remember a certain Q&A awhile back.
Think I know who she was trying to have that egg for.
Are you thinking of Laura? https://eldrikdgt.com/fvt/characters/laura/
No, but that is fair. If I had a nickel for each fairy in this universe that had a pet they wanna breed with…I’d have 2 nickel’s, but it’s weird that it happened twice.
Anyway, was refereeing to This: https://eldrikdgt.com/fvt/qna/qna-158/
I’m pretty sure you would have much more.
I think Ominae will run away and go to the Nihallaks to build a machine so she can lay her egg without having to go to the magic cave.
It might be easier to build a machine to stop the egg developing until a later date, say, when an opening in the cave is available. Supplying the egg with enough magic so that it can develop might be hard to do, compared with freezing the egg’s development.
There won’t be opening in the cave for her as long as Star rules the fairies. Granted, that may not be as long as Star thinks …
That’s not really an option. Emperor would not cooperate with her (and she has no reason to think he will). So, “soft genocide” it is. At least the tentacle monsters, are up front about their evil. The fairies are just prettier

Both, honestly. And both are evil
In case of star fairies, it’s at least sort of voluntary (and yes, it seems they don’t want competition). In case of dark fairies, though … yes, evil.
